HIGH GEAR

CH...

AUGUST 1976

CH... CHÁO.

Oops! First of all, let me correct my mistake from last month. The owners of JJ's on the Strip of John, Bob, John, and Joe!

Speaking of JJ's, they have a new DJ, Tom Long, who was formerly at Twiggy's. Also involved in this game of musical chairs is Joe Costa. He has moved over to Baskerville's Music and Company.

Rubber Capital Scene Expands

The rubber strike in Akron has slowed business, but it has not stopped the American and Stage Coach Inn from adding new features to their respective establishments. Disco Dennis has moved into his new DJ headquarters at the American. The cedar-sided sound booth houses the controls for the sound system and the newly expanded light show. These additions include the new "Dichno-color" light bulbs, listed as the clearest, purest color around. "The colors that shoot across look like a rainbow," remarked one visitor while another exclaimed "The eagles on the wall look like they're moving, flying right off the wall." (I've heard of places coming alive, but...)

The Stage Coach Inn has opened its "living room" lounge bar upstairs. Offering a relatively quiet place to escape from the disco downstairs, the lounge is open weekend nights until 2:30. The juke box is maintained at lower volume to enable people to relax or talk in groups in the overstuffed furniture.

Some groups have already used the lounge for private banquets and parties until 11 p.m. Catering is also available from the Stage Coach's kitchen. For more details contact the bar.

G-P SET TO OPEN

The new Akron bar, the Gentlems Pub, about which you've

been hearing for the past several months was set to open its doors to the public on Thursday, August 12. Located off I-76 at 1104 S. Main St. near the corner of Miller, the entrance is from the rear off the parking lot, which has a security guard on duty at all times. The Gentlemens Pub currently offers a 50 foot bar, 40 tables, and a Sunburst Dance Floor complete with disco sound system. In the lounge area live entertainment is scheduled from 7 to 10, featuring Eric Steckel at the piano. His programming will include show tunes and contemporary sounds.

There will be no cover charge, according to owner Richard Dennison, but a slight minimum will be required at the door. This

CLOSING

Not only are there bar openings but also bar closings. The Dining Room in Sandusky and Crazy Rachel's in Lorain are both closed; see the articles elsewhere in this month's High Gear. Also in Cleveland, the Petrarca. Lounge has been deserted for the last several weeks, but I have not been able to get any definite information.

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

On August 3, Hal's Corner in Canton fired up its kitchen to start satisfying those hunger pangs for their customers. The menu includes shrimp and fish dinners and features "Ribs by Gilbert." (If you enjoy bar-b-

minimum will be exchanged for "Gentlemens Pub Currency" redeemable at the bar.

Future plans for the basement call for a book store and a full service restaurant. In October a benefit show for MCC/Akron is planned.

The pub is "mainly a man's bar," continued Dennison, "but women are welcome." The scheduled weekly events at the G-P will be Mondays: Disco & Draft; Tuesdays: Men's Night; Thursday: Ladies Night.

qued ribs, try 'em.)

During the weekends Hal's will begin staying open past 2:30 now that the restaurant is open.

THE GAMES PEOPLE PLAY

Baskerville's Music and Company has come up with "The Gong Show" a combination game and talent show for Clevelanders to enjoy on Wed'nesday nights. Premiering August 4, master of ceremonies Scaggnolia the Great (and guest Shamu) presented six contestants for the enjoyment of a full house and for the scrutiny of a 3-judge panel.

Contestants are allowed to perform until they either complete their act or are gonged by one of the judges. On opening night the interest of both crowd and judges was directed toward those dancers who were willing to show the most skin. The winner of the $100 first prize was Mona Desmond.

"The Gong Show" will continue on Wednesday nights. Those interested in competing for the $100 prize can contact any of the bartenders at Baskerville's.
